INTRODUCTION MT KENYA
Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest mountain standing at 5,199m (17,058 feet) above sea level and the highest in Kenya. It is situated in Mt Kenya National park and it’s the only mountain in East Africa that stands along the equator. Mount Kenya has three peaks, Batian 5,199m, Nelion 5,188m and point Lenana 4,985m. Other major summits on the mountain include Point Piggott 4,957m, Point Dutton 4,885 and Point John 4,883m. O f the Mt Kenya three main peaks (Batian, Lenana and Nelion), only point Lenana can be reached by trekkers and the other two being only for technical climbers. HOW CAN YOU GET TO MT KENYA?
Mt Kenya is located at North of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya and is only about 200km to get there. There are various options to use when you want to get there since the road is completely accessible by buses, mini buses, taxi cab or car hire. When you want to use Naromoru route you will travel to Naromoru town,for sirimon route Nanyuki town and Chogoria town for Chogoria route.The distances to the mountain from the various towns are usually about 25km or less. The roads are dirty roads and sometimes when it rains they can only be approached by 4x4 or by foot.
MT KENYA CLIMBING ROUTES AND THEIR DAVANTAGES
Mt Kenya climbing is manoeuvred using three main routes namely Naromoru route, Sirimon route and Chogoria route which penetrate the forest and the moorland each route is different and special from each other.
